Taste of Heaven

The most beautiful voices from Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" fill my apartment, and candles flicker softly as I lay under my sister's knit blanket on this crisp November evening. The crescent moon is hazy in the sky, and I unconsciously sigh from relief that Friday has arrived.

It's finally time to start.

I am in such a different point in my life since I last found a reason to post anything worth reading. I was exploring life in the Dominican Republic, and wanted to share my experiences with those back home. Now, I find myself married, living in the hip town of Ann Arbor, working with children and families in Detroit, and having a somewhat different food lifestyle as a recent diagnosis forced me to give up gluten in my diet. I considered sharing recipes with family and friends for a while, and now I have all the more reason.

At first it was really a loss having to go through my cupboards, fridge, and freezer and figure out what I could and couldn't eat. Reading every single label of processed food continues to be time consuming. Yet, a couple times I've accidentally eaten someone's homemade or oven-baked "gluten free" meal that was actually contaminated and don't want to feel that way again... Realizing that another one of my favorite foods does, in fact, have gluten gets me down for the rest of the day as it hits me that I'll never be able to eat it again. And having to give up the cheesecake today for a coworker's birthday made my heart sink. On the flip side, my energy levels have soared in comparison to how I was before I knew the reason behind my extreme fatigue. And I feel like I'm gaining back my confidence and ability to excel in life.

Hopefully my shared experience will help others not only find delicious recipes that make their taste buds sing, but find ways to really enjoy life. I'm all about self care and creating beautiful environments, being surrounded by nature, incorporating songs of peace and freedom, candles and soft lighting, warm showers, massage, and little tastes of heaven. May this be a blessing.
